KRABI — A Thai couple was arrested on Sunday evening after a bomb scare delayed a Bangkok-bound Thai AirAsia flight at Krabi Airport for more than four hours, triggered by a comment they later claimed was only meant as a joke.
The incident unfolded as flight AIQ 4401, an Airbus A320 bound for Suvarnabhumi Airport, was reversing out of its parking bay ahead of takeoff. A flight attendant was helping a Thai couple, aged 46 and 43, store their carry-on bags in an overhead compartment when the pair warned the attendant to "beware of a bomb."

The comment sparked immediate alarm and was reported straight to the aircraft's captain. Despite the couple's subsequent confession that they were only teasing the flight attendant, aviation security protocols left no room for interpretation. The aircraft was immediately removed to a remote parking bay, and all passengers were disembarked. Every piece of luggage was unloaded from the plane for a thorough examination, delaying the flight for hours while bomb disposal teams swept the aircraft.

Deputy Transport Minister Phattrapong Phattraprasit confirmed that the examination was completed at approximately 8:00 p.m. on Sunday, and the flight finally took off around 9:00 p.m. The delay lasted four hours and 15 minutes. No explosive device was found.

Krabi police chief Pol Maj Gen Sukkasem Nakhonwilai said the couple were travelling as part of a group of about 30 people returning to Bangkok after holidays in the southern province. The pair were charged with making a false statement causing fear, affecting flight safety and causing damage to the airline and other passengers. Their names were not made public.
The incident serves as a costly reminder that words have consequences, especially aboard commercial aircraft. A fleeting attempt at humour has left the couple facing criminal charges, while dozens of innocent passengers endured a four-hour delay thanks to a "joke" that was never funny to begin with. Thai authorities have made clear that bomb threats, real or fabricated, will be treated with the utmost seriousness. The couple now awaits legal proceedings, and their holiday in Krabi is likely to be followed by a far less pleasant stay in a very different kind of accommodation.
